SCHOOLS in the Western and Northern divisions will remain closed until further notice.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the schools would remain closed because they were still being used as evacuation centres.
Out of the 119 evacuation centres activated around the country, 48 are schools whereby 42 are located in the West and six are in the North.
Mr Bainimarama said upon recommendation and advice from the Ministry of Education and the National Disaster Management Office, it was decided that schools in the two divisions would remain closed.
In Kadavu, Vunisea Secondary School will also remain closed today as it sustained severe damage yesterday afternoon.
Mr Bainimarama said the extent of flooding experienced in the two divisions’ schools will have to undergo a major clean-up campaign before they reopen for classes.
The PM said schools in the Central Division would open and resume for classes today.
Meanwhile, NDMO director Anare Leweniqila said the priority area right now for NDMO was to get the schools cleaned up and ready for classes. Civil servants too are to report to work today.
