Report recommends ICCPR for Fiji

THE Multinational Observer Group in its report on Fiji’s 2014 General Elections recommended for Fiji to consider becoming a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) because it would effect protections for electoral rights in the country.
This was revealed by the Fijian Elections Office legal compliance co-ordinator, Ana Mataiciwa, during their submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights yesterday.
Ms Mataiciwa said the current electoral system did not discriminate registered voters from exercising their political rights compared with the previous electoral system whereby registered voters exercised their political rights by voting on racial line.
