Regional tourism event boost

THE region’s biggest annual tourism event which aims to promote South Pacific destinations received a major boost yesterday after Bank South Pacific (BSP) recommitted itself as major partners.
The partnership is between BSP and the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) — the organisers of South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) event and is part of a three-year commitment towards supporting the event.
The commitment was marked in Suva yesterday as SPTO finalises plans ahead of the fifth SPTE event scheduled for April 13-17, 2018, in Adelaide, Australia.
To cover costs and other associated needs, BSP has committed over $55,000 towards the event which is set to boost tourism in the South Pacific.
According to SPTO chief executive officer Chris Cocker, the partnership with BSP that was initiated in 2016 was a big boost towards the SPTE event
“BSP has been our major partner for SPTE, which has been since 2014 when it was in Auckland,” Mr Cocker said.
“The partnership was established in 2016 and it’s a three year partnership, so I’d like to thank BSP for their strong commitment towards the biggest regional tourism event that we host for our Pacific Islands.
“Probably this is the major event that SPTO provides for our tourism industry and private sector members since its beginning.”
As a regional bank, BSP head of marketing Nirdesh Singh said they were honoured to be a strong partner in the SPTE event.
“We recognise that this is an important event for the Pacific, for Fiji especially where tourism is huge,” he said.
“As a regional bank, we are very interested in this event and we see a lot of potential in the islands to grow in this area and improve livelihoods and that is why we are keen.”
The tourism trade event which aims to promote South Pacific tourism will this year feature 59 buyers from 13 countries, ranging from Australia right through to our long-haul markets of China, Korea, Hong Kong and India.
Also, 50 sellers from the Pacific region have been confirmed for the event.
The SPTE will be held prior to the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) from April 13-17 at the same venue — Adelaide Convention Centre.
Meanwhile, Mr Cocker said the SPTE event also provided a platform to promote Fiji Airways’ direct flights to Adelaide.
