BAU chief Ratu Epenisa Cakobau was taken in for questioning by Police this morning.

Fiji’s Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed this in a statement issued this morning.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said a team of officers were sent to Bau Island at first light today and had taken Ratu Epenisa Cakobau and key players in for questioning.

He said this was after information was received that they were adamant about continuing with the installation ceremony despite the decision made by the Native Lands Commission yesterday, the same which was relayed to them last night.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said there would no further comments at this stage.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Native Lands Commission chairperson Ratu Isireli Vananalagi Vesikula revealed of a directive issued to Police to stop in the chiefly installment.

Ratu Isireli had said that there was a split on the island of Bau.

He said the NLC had had a meeting with the members of the Tui Kaba clan – Mataiwelagi, Nasogolaca, Muaidule and Naqaranikula – on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, and that the commission was unable to resolve an internal conflict between the clan members.
