AS many as 35 households of Narewa Village, Rakiraki, will soon benefit from a $101,239 Water Authority of Fiji project which will connect them to the main reticulation system.
At present, the villagers who are mostly farmers source water for drinking and cooking from catchments and wells.
WAF is also assisting the residents by carting water to Narewa. In terms of cleaning, the villagers wash their clothes in a nearby river. However, these sources are unreliable especially during dry weather spells.
“The villagers have also been introduced to the rainwater harvesting scheme,” said WAF in a statement.
“Some of them have had tanks installed at their homes, but they had been unable to collect enough water because of lack of rain before this month (April).
“The $101,239 main extension project began in December 2017, and has involved the laying of 450 metres of mPVC pipes, with all relevant attachments and fittings.”
WAF said the project was expected to be completed by early this month.
