Prison death probe

THE Fiji Corrections Service is investigating the death of an 88-year-old inmate at the Vaturekuka Corrections Centre in Labasa.

In a statement sent to this newspaper, the department confirmed a team of officers from Suva were in Labasa to conduct the investigation.

“We have an investigation team that looks into issues like when a prisoner dies in custody,” the statement read.

It is understood the investigating team arrived in Labasa on Friday.

The department said no further comments would be made regarding the situation.

The inmate had served 21 years of his life sentence at the Vaturekuka Corrections Centre.

He is believed to have died at the facility last week.

Police have also confirmed the death of the 88-year-old but withheld his identity.

The inmate was sentenced in 1997 after being convicted for a murder that happened in the 1970s.

Police spokesperson inspector Jokatama Qio had said the inmate died a natural death.

The inmate was a known diabetic patient.
