Prasad reigns

CALVIN Prasad successfully defended the Courts Chess Open Championship title in Suva over the weekend.

The national champion was in impressive form and finished undefeated on 6.5 points to record his sixth straight tournament win this year on Sunday.

Schoolteacher and former national champion Manoj Kumar finished second on six points.

Prasad said he had to overcome some tough challenges in order to retain the title.

“As expected, it was a tough tournament from the first round. Manoj Kumar and Taione Sikivou mounted a strong challenge for the title, and I’m glad I managed to find the right moves on the day,” Prasad said.

Prashil Prakash managed the third spot after beating former national rep Jaiwant Singh on tie-break.

The women’s grade was won by veteran Gloria Sukhu after she managed to hold Hilda Vukikomoala to a draw in the decider. Vukikomoala had to settle for second place.

In the secondary schools category, Sigatoka lad William Bennion took the top prize on 4.5 points followed by Rajiv on four.
