WITH the increasing number of evacuation centres being activated in the Western Division, police have taken on the responsibility of providing security at these centres.
Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said if the need arose for more personnel to be involved in providing security, members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces would be engaged.
He said at the moment, police had identified police officers and members of the RFMF’s Territorial Force who had become evacuees, as point of contacts in evacuation centres.
“The police have taken on the responsibility of providing security at the evacuation centres, but we can’t be present at all the centres as numbers grow,” Brig-Gen Qiliho said.
“So we have gone around to the evacuation centres and identified Territorial Force soldiers who may be evacuees and police officers so we have delegated them to be like turaga ni koro at the evacuation centres.”
Meanwhile, Brig-Gen Qiliho warned would be criminals and those thinking of taking advantage of the situation to think twice.
“We have to be out there as well as criminals are taking advantage of the situation, we had a few robberies in the last few days despite the weather conditions in the Western Division and that’s what we are worried about,” Brig-Gen Qiliho said.
“Please, we have a situation on our hands that needs the co-operation of all. And if anybody is going to take advantage of that by involving themselves in criminal activities, we will come down hard on them.”
