POLICE were out in Labasa Town yesterday asking shop owners to close their shops for safety reasons because of the adverse weather.
A few shops were opened at 8am but were closed before midday following police visits.
Police chief operations officer Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Maretino Qiolevu said police patrolled areas in Labasa to ensure people were safe.
“This is a time when criminals take advantage of an empty town, during this kind of weather,” he said.
“Our teams are in town to make sure that no criminal activities take place and that everyone is safe.”
ACP Qiolevu also advised members of the public to take heed of flood warnings.
“Despite numerous flood warnings, we still find children swimming in flooded roads and rivers,” he said.
“We are urging parents to closely monitor their children’s whereabouts.”
