PAPUA New Guinea national Amanda Vaughan Arivu defied the odds yesterday to walk away with the Best Cadet award at the Saint Vincent College cadet passing-out parade in Tailevu.

The 19-year-old lass from the Gulf Province in PNG said having to attend school in a foreign country was challenging, but winning the award was a push factor during her tenure of study here in Fiji.

“I didn’t expect to win this award because there were a lot of students with the same capabilities to achieve this award,” she said.

“I feel like I have raised the name of my country in my own small way and I’m proud of myself.”

More than 300 students were part of the passing-out parade.
