THE call on the date for the general election is the prerogative of the Prime Minister.
This was reiterated by Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem at a press conference last week, saying that past prime ministers in Fiji had the same prerogative. “It is in the law and it was in the law,” Mr Saneem said.
“It has not changed, except this time around the same politicians who used to have a call on the election date are now trying to subvert the law.”
He said there was a great need for political parties to read and understand the law.
“We were actually astounded by the call from one of the political party representative from Unity Fiji calling on constitutional office holders to declare their own assets, income and liabilities,” he said.
“Whilst I find it very strange for such a call to be made, I feel there needs to be more political maturity in these types of bursts or outbursts.
“As constitutional office holders, we are bound by the requirements of the Constitution. The transparency commission will require us to declare our assets and liabilities.
“In fact, it’s very easy for us to declare our assets and liabilities because it is very easy for us to read the law and declare it,” he added.
