NUKU’ALOFA – Tonga’s ratification of the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) needs to be determined by the people.
And, Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva assured the nation that government’s plan to ratify CEDAW would be put aside in line with the decision of the Privy Council to annul Tonga’s ratification of the treaty.
The Prime Minister made the revelation in a local television program.
Government’s plan to ratify CEDAW has stirred public concerns in Tonga, with many who opposed the Convention questioning whether provisions of the treaty will affect the island kingdom’s Constitution.
