THE business community in Sigatoka had raised the issues of the Sigatoka River banks to previous governments on the danger of soil erosion.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Kumar said this in parliament today while responding to an oral question by Government Member of Parliament, Ruveni Nadalo.

Mr Nadalo had asked Mr Kumar on the rehabilitation programmes undertaken by the Ministry along the Sigatoka River banks.

Mr Kumar said nothing eventuated after the issues were raised by the business community and stakeholders.

He said said after considering the request by the people of Sigatoka the ministry applied for funding to the government.

“Government gave around $890,000 for that project,” he said.

“It was basically neglected by the previous governments and when we saw the need, we went and attended to it.”
