Update: 5:13PM THE Parliament Bus program continued its awareness this week in educating school children around the country to know the functions of the Fijian parliament.
Yesterday, Parliament’s Civic Education and Media Unit were at Nasinu Secondary School and the Pacific Island students that attend the school found the program very interesting and educational.
Year 13 student Sela Fatoga from Tuvalu found the history of the mace very interesting because they did not have that back in Tuvalu.
“For the dragging of the Speaker, I found the history scary as the King had to cut off the Speaker’s heads if they don’t like the decisions they make,” Sela said.
Kiribati Year 13 student Rewi echoed similar sentiments saying they thought that the mace was based on Fijian tradition but now learn that it symbolised the authority of the Speaker.
“We thought that the Prime Minister is more superior but in Parliament, it’s the Speaker who is the one controlling and maintaining order,” Rewi said.
Meanwhile, Commerce teacher Ranjita Singh was grateful of how the program was run, from the multi-media presentation to rewarding prizes to students.
