THE Fiji Nursing Association is looking at increasing its nurses to population ratio to at least 48 nurses per 10,000 populations by 2019 and beyond. FNA chief nurse and midwifery officer Silina Ledua said the association has submitted papers to cabinet asking to have additional 1000 nurses absorbed into the workforce in order to achieve the ratio.

FNA chief nurse and midwifery officer Silina Ledua said the associa- tion had submitted pa- pers to Cabinet asking to have additional 1000 nurses absorbed into the workforce in order to achieve the ratio.

“The Colonial War Me- morial (CWM) Hospital has been identified to do this and we have 40 nurses coming out from there,” Ms Ledua said.

“Back in 2014, we asked the Government to have 1000 nurses to increase our establishment up to 3200. This set up a ratio of 36 to 40 nurses for 13,000 population.

She said nurses needed to change their mind-set towards the development of the nursing profession in the country.
