No maternity unit fundraiser for IWA

Update: 2:28PM A CHARITY ball fundraiser scheduled for May this year and organised by the International Women’s Association (IWA) to renovate the CWM maternity unit is unlikely to happen.

A
statement issued by IWA yesterday says the Association was advised by the
Ministry of Health that they have sought legal opinion and the IWA cannot use
the ‘CWM Maternity Hospital’ as the purpose to fundraise.

“We
are saddened and disappointed by this as the IWA only had the best interests of
women and their babies when we committed to undertake this project,” the
statement said.

It
further states the renovations and upgrades were estimated to cost between $80
– $100,000 and with the wonderful support from the community, these would have
been constructed to excellent standards and provided women with clean, decent
and private bathrooms.

“As
women and mothers, we, at IWA could not accept the deplorable condition of the
bathrooms.   It is unfair to subject any woman to those facilities and
especially not just after having a baby as the risks of infection were too
great.”
