THE Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is backing Fiji Rugby Union’s bid to hold a World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series tournament in the country.
The FRU submitted its bid to World Rugby in February planning to host a three day tournament in October 2019.
The bidding for the 2018-2019 series will take place on June 28.
NCCI president Doctor Ram Raju said Nadi had the capacity and resources to match any other legs of the series.
“NCCI welcomes and supports the national bid to host one of the tournaments in Fiji,” Dr Raju said.
“I’m absolutely certain that all the business houses in Nadi and elsewhere will rally and render all their support necessary to win the bid.
“Sevens rugby is synonymous with a special brand for Fiji that NCCI supports.”
Nadi’s Prince Charles Park has been identified as the venue for the tournament.
The current facility will get a major facelift with the Fiji Government allocating a grant of $10 million if the bid is approved.
“Prince Charles Park can be further developed into a top international sports stadium not only for this purpose but also attract many other international sports and events such as international entertainment programs like Bollywood shows,” Dr Raju said.
“Nadi has untapped potential that we could market internationally and by virtue of having a national or international sports stadium will certainly bring in huge economic benefits.”
