National budget date set
18 April, 2018, 12:00 am
GOVERNMENT will announce the 2018/2019 National Budget on June 22.
The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, made the revelation in Parliament yesterday.
While talking on budget consultations for 2017/2018, the A-G yesterday told National Federation Party leader and Opposition member of Parliament Professor Biman Prasad that his question about the Prime Minister’s salary and the allowances of Cabinet ministers was irrelevant.
“One of the important questions was about the relativity of the salaries of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet ministers and I would like the A-G to inform this House what was his response. I think he talked about Singapore, he talked about corruption,” Prof Prasad said.
The A-G denied the claims made by Prof Prasad, saying it was cheap political point scoring by the MP.
“It is quite….. I’ve forgotten the word because of the lack of credibility of that actual question. It’s completely inappropriate to the substantive question, what he is talking about is, he was not even present in any of the consultations, and nobody in the consultations we’ve had, ever raised that, this is cheap political point scoring — that is what it is,” the A-G said.
The A-G said the 2017/2018 National Budget consultations was conducted in 145 secondary schools in the country, where there were a total of 11 sessions which included more than 1700 students.
He said it was from public consultations as such where youths were enlightened with facts instead of having to rely on the “chit-chat” on social media.
