RATU Ilisoni Naiteqe of Dilkusha Methodist High School set a Nasinu-Naitasiri-Nausori Secondary Schools Athletics Zone’s (Triple N Zone) intermediate boys high jump record at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Despite carrying an hamstring injury, Naiteqe jumped 2.01 metres to break the standing record of 1.72m set by Savenaca Baravilala of Sila Central High School in 2015.

Naiteqe of Naqali Village, Naitasiri, was surpirised.

“I never thought that I would jump higher than the record,,” he said.

“While I continued to try and beat the record, all I thought about was how I will beat the Natabua boy who won last year. All I wanted to do was to make my mother and father proud.

“Our school does not have the right facility to train on. There are no mattress and no bar for high jump, so my coach takes me to Suva Grammar School to train and practice my jumps.

“Every morning I leave home by 5am to reach school early.

“Last year I won a silver medal at the Coca-Cola Games.”

Naiteqe said his personal best was 1.95m.
