Murder suspect denied bail

A MAN who allegedly stabbed his wife to death last week appeared in the Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count of murder.

The suspect, Tevita Vuniwai, appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi.

In his ruling, Magistrate Tuberi denied Mr Vuniwai’s bail, citing the seriousness of the offence.

“The case will be transferred to the Labasa High Court as it is an indictable offence,” he said. “Bail application will be determined by the High Court.

“The suspect will be further remanded in custody and he is to appear at the High Court for mention on the 23rd of March.”

The suspect had been in police custody since the incident occurred last week.

Earlier, police Prosecutor Subramani Naidu had applied to the Magistrates Court for the case to be transferred to the High Court.

Mr Naidu told the court that the suspect be remanded in custody and denied bail because of the seriousness of the offence.

Mr Vuniwai had allegedly stabbed his 22-year-old wife, Amelia Babitu, who was a third year nursing student at the Labasa TISI Sangam College of Nursing.

Ms Babitu was expected to graduate this year.

The alleged incident happened at the Navakamasisuasua Industrial area on Wednesday morning, last week.
