Minister receives fire report

HEALTH Minister Rosy Akbar has this week received a report on last month’s fire at the Lautoka Hospital.

She said arrangements made for the continuation of services provided by the hospital were being maintained well and the ministry was looking at how best it could speed up (repair) works.

“We just received the reports as of yesterday (Tuesday), but at the moment services are continuing, the special outpatients department is continuing, the general out patients department has been decentralised to various health centres, our X-ray room was damaged, but yes services are ongoing and we have a portable X-ray machine that is doing all that, and we have signed an arrangement with Zen’s Medical Centre to provide extra services to the public,” she said.

“Our operating theatres are operating on one major operating theatre and one at the maternity.

“Urgent surgeries are being done in Nadi, and very urgent cases are transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.”

Last month’s early morning fire — which destroyed the old operating theatre and the X-ray unit — forced the evacuation of staff members and patients of the entire hospital.

Officers from the National Fire Authority and the Fiji Military Forces helped in the evacuation process.
