GOVERNMENT has changed the policy of assisting communities regarding the construction of village or community halls. Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu said during a talanoa session last Saturday that Government would use its own standard hall sizes and requirements.

Mr Seruiratu said Government had initially stopped the assistance because it deprived other communities of much needed assistance.

“However, following a review, the assistance was brought back but Government will dictate the size, plan and location of the hall for the specific purpose of making it into an evacuation centre,” he said.

“Members of the community can treat it like a village hall or as they wish, but Government knows the facilities as evacuation centres for natural disasters. “Therefore, the models of the halls are made to cater for people during an emergency situation.”

Mr Seruiratu was responding to a request for a community hall made to him during his talanoa session with copra farmers in Savusavu over the weekend.
