THE Ministry of Local Government has begun meeting with municipal councils around the country to discuss changes in the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Act pertaining to taxi bases. On Thursday, Local Government and Transport Minister Parveen Kumar met with council heads of the Western Division in Nadi.

“Now that there is an amendment to the LTA Act, we have got zoning in place,” he said.

“The municipal councils need to understand the zoning program designed by LTA. “At the moment we are dealing with the bases, the bases we have in all municipalities. We have got two types of bases, one is open and the other is rotational base so we are going to discuss that.”

He said he would hold similar meetings with stakeholders in the Central and Northern divisions, after which a plan on the zoning of bases would be determined.
