The first Fiji Meteorological Service office for the North will be completed soon, says Fiji Meteorological Service director Ravind Kumar.
“It will be completed in the next few months so the people of Labasa should be expecting to receive the same services that are done in our offices in Suva and in Nadi,” he said.
Mr Kumar said the weather office, which would be located at Vaturekuka outside Labasa Town, would enable people in the North to receive timely routine weather bulletins, alerts, warnings and other weather-related services.
“It would upgrade meteorological operations from observational status to weather forecasting, climate prediction, public education, weather information to the general public, awareness to schools and stakeholders,” he said.
“The department has stations that spread around Vanua Levu with limited capability to provide value added services.”
Mr Kumar said the office in Labasa would also provide better access to weather, climate and hydrology services.
“Those services will assist communities with poverty alleviation, protection of life and property, disaster risk reduction and management, climate change adaptation and other benefits.”
