Media Watch creates awareness in schools

Listen to this article:

THE Media Watch Group has begun a week long mass media awareness for 22 schools and ten communities in Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka in its bid to help communities be more media savvy.

Acting Director Laitia Tamata said since this was elections year it was crucial for people to be well informed about the role of the media in Fiji.

“Mainstream media is no longer the only means of information sharing. Social media has in most communities, taken over the role of mainstream media,” Mr Tamata said.

He said the team who were visiting the schools would encourage students to participate in discussions on participatory leaderships especially those who were in the voting age.

Mr Tamata adds MWG will continue to encourage communities to break the culture of silence that often prevails in predominantly conservative societies like Fiji.
