Update: 6:09PM THE media must continue to play a key role in addressing the issue of violence against women in any form to change the mindset of citizens.

In a statement issued today, Media Watch Group acting executive director Laitia Tamata said violence against women was serious and had devastating effects on the lives of women, children, and families, and more often ended in fatality.

“Fiji’s reported cases of domestic violence including physical, sexual and emotional violence is among the highest in comparison with other countries. There may be hundreds of cases of violence of women and girls that are unreported as the victims continue to suffer in silence,” Mr Tamata said.

He added women still often chose to remain silent because they were fearful of the stigma and shame within their homes and communities.

“They feel they have no one to turn to who will respect their dignity.”

He said in this age of digital media, it was important that people communicated issues concerning themselves face to face.
