Marist 7s: Tournament to feature regional teams

Update: 4:54PM THE annual Fiji Bitter Marist 7s continues to live up to its name in helping grassroots rugby.

The 42nd edition of the tournament will be held at the ANZ Stadium in Suva next week.

Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu are the regional teams joining local sides in the two-day event.

Marist Rugby Club’s Koli Korovulavula announced the seeded teams to the 16 pools today.

They are Tabadamu (defending champion), Army 1, Police Blue, Shipping Services Stallion, First Light Taveuni, Ratu Filise, Police White, Marist, Wardens Rugby, Captain Cook Mosi Steelers, Samurai Barracudas, PNG Pukpuks, Team Solomons, Team Tuvalu, Holy Cross Parish Wairiki, and Nawaka.

Top teams that will miss out are Uluinakau, Hideaway Hurricanes, and Cross of Victory from Taveuni.

“In the Marist 7s, we always seed our teams according to last year’s placings. Unfortunately, some of the top teams that finished in the top five last year did not pay their registration on time,” Korovulavula said.

“The Marist 7s is an even-surface competition, hence, when the rural teams paid first, the big teams go out, so we don’t have those big teams next week,” he said.
