GREEN manuring and mechanisation were the key topics discussed during the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji’s (SRIF) field day in Drasa, Lautoka, yesterday.

According to Fiji Sugar Corporation Lautoka sector officer Kanda Sami Goundar, green manuring and mechanisation were critical to the future of the industry.

“Mechanisation, because of a shortage of labour and whatever labour is there their demands are too high and are increasing every day,” he said.

“For green manuring, it has to do with the degradation of the soils we have been mining year in and year out. We are taking out more than what we are putting back in the soil.”

SRIF acting CEO Prem Naidu said one of the farm sites in Drasa was planted with the green manuring plant, urdi and moong.
