WHEN water levels began to rise in early on Sunday at Paipai settlement just outside Lautoka City, Pastor Leone Naivalubasaga knew flooding in his area was imminent.
What he didn’t expect was the extent of the damage the flood waters would cause.
At 7am yesterday morning, he had to evacuate with his family to Deshbandhu Primary School.
Mr Naivalubasaga said they tried to move earlier but couldn’t.
“Our first priority was the children,” he said.
As many as 48 people sheltered at the school on Sunday, majority of them children.
“We have brought whatever rations we could and we are now trying to share whatever groceries we have.”
He said his wife and four children were joined by their relatives from Yasawa, who had travelled to the West for the Easter long weekend.
