Lautoka to defend title

LAUTOKA will defend the Fiji Muslim Sports Association 2018 Vodafone Inter District Championship at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this weekend.

The side will be without the services of midfielder Zibraaz Sahib and striker Mohammed Shazil both of whom are part of the Vodafone Blues squad preparing for the OFC Champions League quarter-finals next week.

Hosts Nadi will be boosted by district reps William Valentine and Afraz Ali.

Ba, Rewa, Nadroga and Varavu will also feature a few district reps.

Fiji Muslim Sports Association vice-president Javed Ahmed said a total of 17 teams had registered for the four-day event.

He said the selectors would be scouting for talents to be part of the national training squad for the FANCA World Cup which will be played at Churchill Park in Lautoka in August.

“We are delighted to have Vodafone on board as major sponsors for the event for a second year running and are grateful for their continuous support,” Ahmed said.

“All the teams have been preparing well and are looking forward to a very exiting tournament where a host of district reps will be in action.

“Pool matches will be played on Friday and Saturday while the quarter-finals will be played on Sunday. The semi-finals and grand final are scheduled for next Monday.”

Ahmed said the event was getting bigger and better every year.

“This year’s tournament will be interesting as players will be out to impress national selectors for a place in the Fiji team for the FANCA World Cup.”

Nadi will take on Rewa in the opening match at 8.30am on Friday with the official opening scheduled for 1.30pm.
