The audit of the 2016 accounts of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources resulted in issue of an unqualified audit opinion, says permanent secretary Malakai Finau.

Mr Finau, in his submissions this morning to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), said: “The ministry has made a lot of improvements and I would like to mention three issues in support of this.”

The three issues highlighted by the PS for Lands and Mineral Resources related to the audit being unqualified for 2016 whereas it was qualified in 2015; there were only 10 audit issues in 2016 compared to 20 in 2015 and there was no loss through misappropriation of funds in 2016 as opposed to a loss of about $130,000 in 2015.

“The unqualified audit report was achieved through good accounting practice and adherence to all financial regulations,” he said.

The PAC was chaired by Government MP Mohammed Dean with Opposition members Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Aseri Radrodro including reps from the Auditor-General’s office and Ministry of Economy.
