Labour backs call for dialogue

THE Fiji Labour Party has commended UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein for his call on Government to open up dialogue with civil society on the many issues facing our country.

“This is what the opposition parties have been saying for a long time,” said party leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

“The fact that the UN High Commissioner saw the need to comment on this is clearly an indictment on the government’s failure to consult on issues of national interest.

Mr Chaudhry said comments made by the UN Human Rights Commissioner although diplomatically put, should be taken seriously by the Government.

Meanwhile, Mr Chaudhry said Mr Al Hussein’s statement on election must be taken seriously by political parties, particularly in relation to the autonomy (independence) of the Fijian Elections Office.

Mr Al Hussein questioned whether Fiji’s independent institutions were truly autonomous.
