A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD student of Nabauto in Savusavu is fighting for his life at the Labasa Hospital after he was hit by a vehicle on Thursday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the student had disembarked from his school bus and was crossing the road when a passing vehicle hit him.
Ms Naisoro said the passing vehicle was driven by a 27-year-old.
“The vehicle was travelling towards Savusavu Town at the time of the incident,” she said.
“The incident happened at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon.
“Victim was transported to the hospital by the driver himself and was later transferred to Labasa Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
“Police are continuing investigations into the incident.”
Police have urged drivers and pedestrians alike to be cautious when using the road.
“Drivers need to slow down when driving past parked buses to ensure the safety of passengers who may be disembarking buses to cross roads,” said Ms Naisoro.
“Parents need to also talk to their children continuously about road safety because it is their duty to do so.
“Children are sometimes forgetful and they need to be reminded of safety tips every day.
“Safety of individuals on the road cannot be handled by authorities alone and, therefore, we need to take caution to ensure that we do not threaten the lives of others.”
