NOUMEA, 19 SEPTEMBER 2018 (RNZ PACIFIC) – New Caledonia’s pro-independence FLNKS movement says a majority of voters on the roll for the November referendum on full sovereignty are indigenous Kanaks.
The roll, which is restricted to long-term residents, was released at the end of August and includes 174,000 names.
According to the analysis of the FLNKS, more than 29,000 people on the list of voters with common law status are Kanaks.
It said they need to be added to the 80,000 people with customary status, which means that 63 percent of the possible voters are Kanaks.
A senior FLNKS member Aloisio Sako said talks will be held with the authorities to ensure the campaign leading up to the vote on November 4th will go ahead in all calm.
He has also called on the French state to declare now what it intends to do in case of a yes vote and what in case of a no vote.
