FIJI’S Chief Justice Anthony Gates paid a formal visit to the President of the Federal Court of Switzerland Ulrich Meyer, in Lausanne, Switzerland earlier today.
According to a media statement from Government, Justice Gates was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Fiji to Geneva Nazhat Shameem Khan, Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director Ashwin Raj, and Legal Aid director Shahin Ali.
Justice Gates also discussed judicial education and reform, court recording and transparency of court decisions, and methods of judicial appointment, with the President of the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.
The Federal Supreme Court is the highest court in Switzerland, and hears all appellate matters including human rights cases. The delegation was then taken on a tour of the Federal Supreme Court building, its courtrooms, and library, and hosted to a reception by the President of the Court.
The Federal Supreme building is of notable historic and architectural interest.
