A 22-YEAR-old man who pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by the High Court in Suva.

While sentencing Penijamini Taleimaitoga, High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar said that street mugging had become too prevalent in this country.

Taleimaitoga robbed a 50-year-old man on June 23, 2018, in Kinoya while the man was on his way to work.

The court heard that Taleimaitoga punched the man and robbed him of his bag that contained $160 cash.

Justice Goundar took into account that Taleimaitoga was a first offender who had also dropped out of school when he was in year 8.

He told Taleimaitoga that he attacked an innocent old man and the courts had a duty to protect people from this behaviour.

After sentencing Taleimaitoga, Justice Goundar told him that he was not fixing a non-parole period and if he was going to behave in prison, one third of his sentence would be discounted.
