Hunt triumphs in Italy to claim record seventh Red Bull Cliff Diving title as Iffland seals hat-trick

Gary Hunt drew on all his Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series experience to win the 2018 season finale in Italy and claim a record seventh title as Australian Rhiannan Iffland sealed a superb women’s hat-trick. Here is all you need to know:

– Briton Hunt’s victory last time out in Mostar saw him take a slender 20-point lead over American Steven LoBue into the final Polignano a Mare round.

– Meanwhile Iffland needed a big performance in the 2018 season finale if she wanted to get past overall leader Adriana Jimenez of Mexico after the last Bosnia and Herzegovina stop.

– Iffland put on a diving masterclass on Saturday in the stunning Italian setting heading into the Sunday climax, while Hunt was locked in joint fifth with LoBue.

– Thirty-four-year-old Hunt, though, has been in this situation many times before and left his best until last to twist and somersault his way to a score of 418.65.

– LoBue claimed a brilliant second on the day with 406.05 with last year’s champion Jonathan Paredes of Mexico taking the final podium place with 391.35.

– Hunt’s Italian win saw him wrap up a record seventh King Kahekili Trophy in this 10th anniversary season with 1010 points from LoBue (950) and Paredes (790).

– Meanwhile Iffland cruised to victory with a winning score of 342.25 from Canadian Lysanne Richard in second and Belarusian Yana Nestsiarava in third.

– The classy victory saw him leapfrog Jimenez for a record third successive women’s title with 830 points from Jimenez (760) and Richard (690).

– 70,000 passionate fans on Italy’s Adriatic coast at the place where houses rise from the rocks saw the thrilling climax as well as viewers on Red Bull TV with another action-packed Cliff Diving season brought to an end.
