Hopes for accurate business information

AUTHORITIES are hoping a new questionnaire as part of a economic census of US territories will provide more accurate business information on American Samoa than in the past.

The Economic Census for the US and its territories is carried out every five years and last week officials with the US Census Bureau were in Pago Pago as part of preparations.

Data collection will focus on various industry issues including revenue, payroll, employment.

For the 2017 census, a new addition has been added to the questionnaire dealing with specific products and services offered by all businesses.

US Census Bureau official, Robert Nusz said that in the past, the federal agency didn’t collect as much detail.

“Our questionnaires we used were very limited, so we had one questionnaire to cover all businesses in American Samoa in previous economic censuses.

“This time we have eight industry-specific questionnaires so we were able to put different things on each of those eight questionnaires to tailor to each industry that it covers.”

Preliminary results of the economic census is set for release in October 2019.
