High Court jails father for assaulting wife

Listen to this article:

ASSAULTS on women, especially within their own domestic environment, are one of the worst forms of physical assault.

High Court judge Justice Paul Madigan made this comment while handing down a custodial sentence in Labasa today to Peni Maisiri for assaulting his wife in March early this year.

Justice Madigan said such offence undoubtedly caused adverse physical and psychological trauma in the life of the victim.

Maisiri who was convicted for two counts of act intended to cause grievous harm after pleading guilty to both counts was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

The father of four will serve a minimum term of 12 months in prison before he is eligible for parole.

A domestic violence restraining order was also imposed on him and was ordered to continue with in-house Correctional Services counselling for as much time that the psychologist deems it necessary.
