Happy Boxing Day

Many people will no doubt be feeling the after effects of the festivities yesterday. It is Boxing Day today.

We are well into the festive season.

New Year’s day looms in the horizon now.

As we count down the days to another brand new year, there will be joy and merry-making.

As we indulge in the festivities associated with this season, we should remind ourselves about the importance of safety issues.

This is one holiday thousands of Fijians look forward to.

Different people have different reasons for celebrating this special holiday.

Regardless of our individual beliefs, we all enjoy Christmas in our own little ways.

As we enjoy the Christmas break, we should remind ourselves that there are many Fijians who are struggling to make ends meet. Some did not have enough to eat and many had no roof they could call their own over their heads.

To members of the security forces on duty, security guards, corrections service, journalists, hotel staff, all those who work in our hospitals and health centres around the country, LTA staff, supermarket cashiers and staff, public service vehicle drivers, and everyone else who could not take a day off over the Christmas break, we say thank you for your service and commitment.

Let’s make this period a source of national unity.

Let us renew our commitment to live a happy and healthy life and let us try to be active and be conscious of health issues.

Let us spare a thought for the less fortunate.

Let us make an effort to put a smile on the faces of the less privileged, and offer warmth and love.

The spirit of Christmas is about giving.

As we go about our plans today, let’s remember that accidents happen. They happen because we allow them to.

If you are on the road today, please stick to our road rules.

Plan to arrive safely at your destination, on time, and most importantly, alive.

Please stay alert. Be considerate and aware of the fact that there are many other road users.

For all those who will be converging on our many beaches and waterways, let us be vigilant. Let us be mindful of water safety and keep our loved ones in sight.

We are just days away from the end of the year. Let us work together to end 2017 on a good note.

We hope you enjoy yourselves, stay safe and live life to the brim. We hope you have a happy Boxing Day.
