A NADI community is in shock after the gruesome discovery of body parts in an unused well in rural Malamala.

Police have confirmed that a man in his 20s, is in police custody as a result of last weekend’s grisly find.

Yesterday residents were still grappling with the news as police had not officially identified the body.

Those who spoke to this newspaper said police officers had been at the scene since Saturday. An excavator was used to dig the area where the discovery was made.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the samples obtained from the site had been sent to the lab in Suva for DNA testing.

Speculation is rife in the community that the victim could be a woman from the area who was reported missing on September 11 when she failed to return from work.

Ms Naisoro said a man in custody is being questioned “for his alleged involvement in the disappearance of his wife, also in her 20s”.

“The victim was reported missing by relatives and upon further investigation, information was received that her husband allegedly inflicted serious harm on her,” she said.
