Update: 1:33PM THE Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) was among other organisations and individuals that observed Earth Hour in the country last night.

As a symbolic action, GPH dimmed non-essential lights for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

GPH general manager Peter Gee said as a small nation, we were more conscious than most of the need to preserve the environment.

He said the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative helped highlight the need to take tangible actions to protect the biodiversity, preserve the resources and to tackle the issue of climate change.

“This year, Fiji has been chosen as the first country in the world to dim our lights and we at GPH are extremely proud that our iconic hotel will lead the way,” Mr Gee said.

Earth Hour is observed annually to encourage individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour on a specific day as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
