WAILEVU farmer Shiri Krishna used to lose 60 tonnes of cane from his 25 acre farmland annually because of rising sea level which seemed to increase every year, threatening his farm.

This will now be a problem of the past after the Ministry of Waterways revamped the floodgate in the area, preventing tidal waters from inundating Mr Krishna’s farm.

“The 60 tonnes of cane were valued at $4800 considering that the price of a tonne stood at $80,” he said.

“This was mainly due to the poorly maintained floodgates in the past 10 years which posed a lot of problem to us farmers.”
