GOVERNMENT needs to spend a lot of money to improve and maintain drainage systems around the country especially flood prone areas, says Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Speaking during the 2018/2019 National Budget consultation at Sila Central High School in Nausori, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Government had also sought help from international organisations to partner with them to help address the issue.
“Over the years a lot of developments have been allowed without any proper direction of water drainage,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“Over a past couple of decades there has been a lot of unauthorised developments in the hills, trees have been cut, there has been a lot of soil erosion and of course a lot of flooding.”
He said the establishment of the Ministry of Waterways was imperative because the issue of poor drainage and waterways was concerning.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also assured people in Nausori that Government was doing its best to address the issue of poor drainage.
