THE Fijian Government will not fund this year’s Fiji International golf tournament, unlike the past four annual events.

Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou confirmed this saying they had supported the event from 2014 but it had now grown to a level where it could fund itself.

“The government supported the event in its initial growth but now they can run on their own.” Mr Tuitubou said.

Last year, the Government allocated $9m for the 2017 event.

Nothing has been allocated towards the event in the 2018/2019 National Budget announced last week.

The event started in 2014 where Australian Steve Jefferies won the inaugural title.

The tournament boasts a prize pool of AUS$1.5m.

Australian Jason Morris won last year’s event.

Meanwhile, $3.55m has been allocated for a Super Rugby match to be hosted in Fiji next year.
