POLICE have urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s whereabouts during this adverse weather. This is after a seven-year-old girl allegedly drowned at the Naua river in Dreketi on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the girl had accompanied her grandmother to a funeral at Naua when the alleged incident took place.
“The incident happened on Sunday afternoon when the body of the girl was found floating at the Naua river,” she said.
“Circumstances leading to the drowning are being investigated to ensure that there was no foul play. “The body of the girl is currently at the Labasa Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination to determine the actual cause of her death. Investigation into the case continues.”
The drowning death toll stands at 13 compared with 14 for the same period last year.
“Children need to be closely supervised at all times and it is unfortunate that a child has lost her life,” Ms Naisoro said.
“We are once again calling on parents and guardians to monitor their child’s whereabouts at all times. “The current weather situation is also a concern if children are not closely supervised as they are often found swimming in flooded areas.”
