Update: 1:31PM MORE THAN 6600 athletes and officials from 71 nations paraded the Carrara Stadium yesterday for the opening of the 21st Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Fiji was the 58th nation to be welcomed by about 35,000 spectators who braved the rain to witness the occasion.

The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, officially opened the event and relayed his appreciation for the unity that the sporting event brought.

“Over the years, these friendly Games have shown the potential of the Commonwealth to connect people of different backgrounds and nationalities,” said Prince Charles.

“In this spirit of cooperation and togetherness, common ground has been established and enduring friendships forged.”
