Gamel maps out plan

Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is currently working to organise an international tournament in Fiji later this year.

The Vodafone national football head coach Christophe Gamel said most of the teams had showed their interest to play again.

Gamel, after the team’s arrival from Manila on Sunday, said the Philippines Football Association team was keen for a re-match.

“Every team we played against, they wanted to play a return match here at home because we gave them trouble, made things difficult for them knowing they were better ranked than us.

“For them (Philippines), we will have to wait for their confirmation because they will be playing Tajikistan for the Asian Cup qualifiers — then we can start to liaise with them.

“It’s positive,” an optimistic Gamel said.

The Frenchman said they were working on a plan to invite overseas teams to play in Fiji.

“The results are not always positive unfortunately, but we are discussing with Fiji FA for some big matches in June.

“We are trying to invite overseas teams to Fiji for a tournament and it will be good if we manage to get things done,” he said.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf backed Gamel’s words and said they were in the preparatory phase to organise something big.

“We are intending to bring one team from Asia and two from the region to make it a four-team tournament either in Lautoka or Suva so that our national team can play three international matches within a span of eight days.

“While everyone will be enjoying the FIFA World Cup on TVs, the football fans can enjoy international football at the same time locally.

“But we are still in the preparatory phase where we are writing letters to invite teams, so we will make a press release once everything is confirmed.”
