THE Fiji National Sports Commission will focus a lot on youth development programs in the next financial year.

More than $1million was allocated to the Youth Capacity Building and Training Programme in the 2018/2019 National Budget.

This is an increase of $200,000 compared to the previous budget.

FNSC chairperson Peter Mazey said they had been doing a lot of projects for the youth.

“We have taken our development plans to the outer islands as well. It’s not surprising to know that we have identified talents who are actually playing sports overseas now,” Mazey said.

He said the programs had also been organised to fight against NCDs and to promote healthy living.

“In the last five years, 10 per cent of our whole population (which is close to a million) have participated in one of our programs. We also train leaders everywhere we go so that they continue the program in our absence. We do make regular checks to confirm the smooth sailing of our projects.”

Mazey said they would continue with all their programs in the next 12 months with the participation numbers expected to grow.
