THE Fijian Teachers Association has secured a 50-acre agriculture lease with the Vanuavou landowning unit in Vaturova, Cakaudrove.
The deal was secured after a recent meeting with the iTaukei Land Trust Board where landowners agreed to the terms of the lease.
FTA president Netani Druavesi said the land would be used for farming purposes as part of the association’s plans to venture into business projects.
He said the agreement by the Vanuavou people was good news because the FTA had about 10,000 yaqona plants on the land.
“We have also planted dalo which is expected to mature while the yaqona is expected to mature in the next four years,” he said.
“The plan to secure the lease was approved by the association’s board and members.
“At the end of the process the whole intention of the project is to increase and generate dividends for members.”
Mr Druavesi said the association had also secured a loan of $4.2 million which would be paid back within the next 10 to 15 years through the farming venture.
Speaking during the consultation, landowning unit trustee Vilise Semesa reminded the FTA representatives and treasurer, Semi Vela, of the conditions of the lease, adding they would not entertain any activity not agreed to by both parties.
